One of the great things about scouting is its emphasis on being good citizens...in your community, your country and in the world. There are many ways to demonstrate commitment to helping others in our community of Chapel Hill. Recently Troop 59, under the leadership of Terry Fields, Assistant Scout Master, participated in a food drive to support the local organization TABLE.
TABLE focuses on providing food for children in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City School system who might not otherwise have food to eat on weekends and days that public schools are not in session. On Wednesday, January 24 Shannon, a volunteer with TABLE, came to Troop 59's scout meeting to explain how TABLE operates and how the organization would utilize the food that the troop had collected. After the presentation the scouts participated in labeling and dated the food, an important part in the process of distribution of nutritional foods to area children.
The following day, Scoutmaster Fields delivered the food donations to the TABLE distribution center and had the opportunity to witness the flurry of volunteers all working feverously packing food in backpacks to be delivered to area schools.
TABLE is a great way for the young scouts in Troop 59 to support other kids in our community. Scouts are encouraged to explore a variety of ways to support their community. TABLE is certainly a worthy cause to support. Scoutmaster Fields is hopeful that the scouts will take the opportunity to make this an annual community service project for the troop.
