Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Troop 59

On a cold and windy weekend in early November, Troop 59 set out for a three day, two night hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail. 21 scouts and adult leaders started at Carvers Gap, Tennessee and hiked up Little Hump Mountain, and then the respectable (Big) Hump Mountain toward Mountain Overview Shelter (affectionately known as “The Barn”). After a chilly first night’s stay inside the barn, the troop hiked 5 plus miles to Doll Flats, just short of the North Carolina border where they camped for their final night. The group experienced spectacular views and fun fellowship. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is physically and mentally demanding but everyone met the challenge with enthusiasm and pride!

This is one of the most popular adventure trips that the scouts themselves choose to do. Each of the nine scouts on the hike was accompanied by his father, showing that the trip is popular for parents as well as scouts.
